Mr. Schortzmann has approximately 18 years of asset management investing experience, of which 15 years have been focused on acquiring GP stakes. He launched Stonyrock after over five years with the Blackstone Group (“Blackstone”), where he was a Managing Director and Investment Committee Member, and part of the leadership team within the Hedge Fund Solutions Group’s Strategic Capital Group (includes the hedge fund seeding and GP stakes businesses). Craig joined Blackstone in early 2013 at the inception of the Blackstone Strategic Capital Holding Fund (“BSCH”) and played an integral role in helping launch, capital raise, and invest Blackstone’s inaugural $3.3B minority GP Stakes fund. As a Deal Captain, Mr. Schortzmann was responsible for sourcing, underwriting, negotiating and structuring investments and led five GP investments which accounted for over $1.3B of invested capital.
Prior to Blackstone, Mr. Schortzmann was a Principal at Asset Management Finance (“AMF”), an affiliate of Credit Suisse that focused exclusively on acquiring minority GP stakes in alternative and traditional asset management firms. While at AMF, Craig helped lead investment underwriting, diligence, structuring, and execution of AMF’s affiliate transactions. AMF owned stakes in 21 managers, including several within the alternatives space. Prior to joining AMF, Craig was an Associate within the Investment Management Division of Brown Brothers Harriman & Co., where he was an assistant portfolio manager and research analyst, implementing investment strategies for both institutional and high net-worth clients.
Mr. Schortzmann received a B.A. in History from Wesleyan University. He is a term member of the Council on Foreign Relations as well as a member of the Milken Young Leaders Circle. He holds the Chartered Financial Analyst and Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst designations and membership in the CFA Institute as well as the CAIA Institute.
